Skin Signals
Oily skin shines by midday – it’s not just “greasy skin”
You cleanse, blot, try to stay matte – and by afternoon the shine is back. That’s annoying, sure, but it’s also information. Often, the skin isn’t making “too much oil”; it’s trying to compensate for something it’s missing.

Why does oily skin shine so fast?
What you’re seeing is often a mix of sebum, under-hydration, and a barrier that’s under pressure. When skin is stripped too hard or dried out, it can respond with sebum rebound – meaning oil production feels more active. Not drama. Biology.
Over-cleansing and stripping are classic culprits. Harsh surfactants, too much exfoliation, and shine-control tactics built around removing more and more can give you a brief matte finish, but they also leave skin more reactive. Barrier research keeps pointing to the same thing: when lipids and water are depleted, skin can feel oily, tight, and rough at the same time.
There’s also a difference between oily and dehydrated. A face can gleam and still be thirsty. Especially after commuting, office air, stress, or a routine that’s simply too aggressive. We don’t diagnose – but we do help you read the signs and stop treating your skin like the enemy.
Here’s what to do today
Cleanse more gently
Swap harsh cleansing for something that removes grime without leaving skin squeaky. The goal is clean skin, not that tight, stripped feeling that tends to backfire later.
Stop the stripping
Cut back on extra exfoliation, strong acids, and unnecessary double cleansing. Skin does not need to feel raw to behave better.
Add water support
Under-hydration can look like oil. Use lightweight, balancing layers that help skin hold onto water instead of only chasing a matte surface.
Track the pattern
Do you shine more after workouts, stress, hot meals, or a harsh morning routine? Spotting when the shine appears makes it easier to understand what your skin is reacting to.
See a doctor if needed
If shine comes with strong redness, flaking, burning, sudden changes, or a rash that won’t settle, it’s smart to speak to a healthcare professional. Then it’s no longer just about shine-control.

What actually solves it
Start by stopping the war on oily skin. A gentle cleanse does more than another round of stripping. Au Naturel Makeup Remover uses MCT oil to lift off what sits on the surface without upsetting the skin’s balance – exactly what a stressed face often needs.
Once the surface calms down, the skin has room to stop overreacting. That’s where the DUO kit fits naturally: The ONE, with CBD and MCT, helps the skin feel more regulated, while I LOVE, the CBG serum, is made to calm and support skin that feels both shiny and easily irritated. The point isn’t to dry the shine out – it’s to let skin settle.
And think beyond the surface. If your skin keeps drifting out of balance, it can make sense to support the bigger picture too. Fungtastic Mushroom Extract is an oral supplement with chaga, reishi, lion’s mane, and cordyceps that can support immune function and gut health – two systems that often show up on the skin. This isn’t quick-fix thinking. It’s the calmer, longer game.

Frequently asked questions
Is oily skin the same as greasy skin?
Not necessarily. Skin can be oily and still dehydrated or irritated from over-cleansing. In that case, shine is often a response to imbalance rather than proof that your skin simply makes too much oil.
Why do I get shinier the more I wash?
Too much cleansing can disrupt the barrier and trigger sebum rebound. Skin may increase oil activity when it feels stripped, almost like a defensive response.
Should I stop using mattifying products altogether?
Not always, but if your shine-control routine relies on drying the skin out, it’s the wrong approach. Choose products that balance instead of ones that only hide the issue for a few hours.
When should I seek help?
If shine comes with persistent redness, burning, flaking, or sudden changes, contact a healthcare professional. It’s important to rule out something beyond ordinary imbalance.
