Dark circles under eyes – what are they really?

By Christopher Genberg

You notice them in the mirror first thing in the morning, sometimes all day: dark circles under eyes that make you look more tired than you feel. But what you see is not always the cause. Pigment, visible vessels, shadows from the tear trough, or plain old sleep loss all ask for different answers.

Dark circles under eyes – what are they really?

Pigment, vessels or just shadows?

Dark circles under eyes are not one single problem. Periorbital hyperpigmentation means extra pigment in the skin, often more common with genetics, sun exposure, rubbing and irritation. When the skin is thin, the vessels underneath can show through as a blue-grey cast. And if you have a deeper tear trough, the hollow under the eye can cast a shadow that looks like a dark ring.

That is why harsh eye creams and aggressive exfoliation often miss the point. If the issue is vessels or shadow, you cannot scrub it away. If the skin barrier is already stressed, too many actives can make the area even more reactive. Studies also suggest that sleep deprivation, inflammation and allergy tendencies can make the eye area look darker and more tired.

So the real question is simple: what are you actually dealing with? Is it genetic, pigment-based, vessel-related or mostly a shadow? Once you know that, it becomes much easier to choose care that calms the skin instead of fighting it. If the change is sudden, one-sided or comes with pain or swelling, get it checked by a clinician.

What to do today

1

Check in daylight

Stand by a window and gently stretch the skin under your eye. If the area looks lighter when pulled flat, you are likely dealing with shadow from the tear trough, not just pigment.

2

Stop rubbing

Rubbing your eyes when you are tired, itchy or removing makeup can trigger more pigment and irritate already delicate skin. Treat the area like skin, not a scratchy surface.

3

Use a gentle cleanse

Choose a remover that does not leave the skin tight. Au Naturel Makeup Remover with MCT oil takes off the day without dragging on an area that is already thin.

4

Sleep more consistently

Sleep loss shows fast around the eyes because circulation and fluid balance shift. Try regular bedtimes and a slightly elevated pillow if you tend to wake up puffy.

5

Support the inside too

If your skin and gut feel connected, they often are. Fungtastic Mushroom Extract can be a quiet way to support immune function and the gut from the inside.

How to actually deal with it

How to actually deal with it

The fix is not to attack the area harder; it is to make the skin less reactive. When dark circles under eyes are amplified by a stressed barrier, dryness or irritation, calmer steps matter most. DUO-kit with The ONE and I LOVE is made to support a more balanced skin surface, so the eye area looks less worn out and uneven.

For cleansing, the same rule applies: remove the day without waking the skin up. Au Naturel Makeup Remover uses MCT oil for a gentle, effective cleanse that respects the eye area. If part of your darkness is pigment or vessels, a kind routine will not erase everything, but it can stop you from making it worse.

And if you want to think beyond the skin surface, Fungtastic Mushroom Extract can offer quiet support for immune health and the gut. It is not a quick fix, but it fits a reality where skin often reflects more than what you put on top. Build calm, consistency and less friction – that is often where improvement starts.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have dark circles under eyes?

Usually it is a mix of genetics, thin skin, visible vessels, pigment or shadows from the tear trough. Sleep loss and irritation can make them look worse, but they are rarely the whole story.

Do eye creams help dark circles?

Sometimes a little, especially if the skin needs soothing or moisture. But if the main issue is shadow or visible vessels, no cream can fully fix the underlying cause.

When should I see a doctor?

If the darkness appears suddenly, is only on one side, or comes with pain, swelling or vision changes, get it checked. That is not the time to guess.

Can sleep deprivation cause dark circles?

Yes. Lack of sleep can make vessels more visible, the skin look duller and the area puffier, all of which deepen the look of dark circles. But it is usually one piece of the puzzle.
