Skincare in your 40s – when the rules change
In your 40s, your skin often changes faster than your routine. Estrogen starts to drop, the barrier gets more fragile, and what used to work can suddenly feel like too much. That’s not failure — it’s biology showing up at the surface.

Why does skin get drier, patchier and harder to manage?
Perimenopause is not a clean switch but a long stretch of hormonal fluctuation. As estrogen declines, oil production, moisture retention and barrier function are all affected. The result can be tightness, dry patches, more sensitivity and skin that looks uneven even when you’re doing “all the right things.”
At the same time, collagen declines by about 1% a year after the mid-20s, and by the 40s that gradual loss becomes more visible when paired with hormonal change. Research also shows pigment cells become easier to trigger by UV, inflammation and heat, which is why melasma can appear or become more stubborn. That does not mean your skin needs harsher acids — often it needs less.
The usual skincare dogma here is to scrub harder, strip more oil and pile on actives. But a skin in transition usually needs less drama, not more. Think fewer steps, gentler cleansing and products that help the barrier hold together while life gets messy.
Five things that help today
Cleanse without stripping
Choose a mild cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin squeaky and tight. Au Naturel Makeup Remover with MCT oil melts off SPF and grime without punishing the barrier from the first step.
Add comfort, not friction
When skin feels thin or tight, it usually needs support more than exfoliation. A face oil like The ONE can bring back that softer, more resilient feel dry skin is missing.
Go for calm over correction
Redness, reactivity and small breakouts are easier to trigger when skin is stressed. I LOVE with CBG is built to calm and support skin that seems to be on high alert.
Cut back on actives
You do not need a nightly lineup of acids, retinoids and peels to see results. Choose an antioxidant like Ta-DA serum when you want something smart without overloading the skin.
Support the body too
When hormones are swinging, it often shows up across the whole system, not just the face. Fungtastic Mushroom Extract is an easy oral support when you want to give your body extra resilience through a messy phase.

Here’s how to actually solve it
A good skincare routine in your 40s is not about chasing “before and after” with force. It’s about building skin that can handle hormonal shifts, dry spells and pigment that triggers more easily. That’s why it makes sense to keep a base routine flexible enough to change with seasons, stress and where you are in life.
The DUO kit with The ONE and I LOVE is made for exactly that. The ONE brings skin-regulating lipids and softness, while I LOVE adds CBG for calm and balance when skin feels irritated or unpredictable. Together they give you a fuller cannabinoid spectrum without making you guess between ten different bottles.
When skin needs more than basic support, Ta-DA serum is the obvious next step: an antioxidant cocktail with CBG and adaptogens that fits when you want to support skin without pushing it. And when your body feels as off-kilter as your skin, Fungtastic Mushroom Extract is a simple everyday support. This is not anti-aging panic. It’s skincare that understands life moves.

Frequently asked questions
Is melasma the same as dryness?
No. Dryness is about barrier function and moisture loss, while melasma is pigment that’s easily triggered by hormones, UV and heat. They can happen together, but they need different kinds of support.
Do I need to stop using actives in my 40s?
Not necessarily stop, but often reduce. If your skin is becoming more reactive, it’s smarter to use fewer, more targeted products than to keep pushing with acids and strong treatments.
Why does my skin feel tight even when I moisturize?
As estrogen drops, skin becomes less efficient at holding moisture and maintaining a stable barrier. A standard lotion may not be enough, and you may need more supportive lipids and calming ingredients.
Can I keep the same routine all year?
Yes, if it’s flexible. In practice, that usually means keeping your core steps and adjusting the amount of support depending on climate, stress, menstrual cycle and how your skin is behaving right now.
