Questions and answers

Can you use CBD skincare while pregnant or breastfeeding?

By Christopher Genberg

Short answer: there is too little research to say it is safe. Skincare gives much lower exposure than CBD taken by mouth, but since studies are lacking, we recommend talking to your midwife or doctor before you start.

Can you use CBD skincare while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Why isn't the answer a simple yes?

Skin often changes during pregnancy. It can become drier, more sensitive, develop pigmentation or breakouts. It is understandable to want to take care of it, and at the same time to be careful with everything you use.

There are currently no studies showing that CBD is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises against CBD in any form during pregnancy and breastfeeding, mainly because the knowledge is missing.

The research mainly concerns CBD taken by mouth. Skincare is absorbed to a much smaller extent, but smaller is not the same as zero, and it has not been studied. That is why we make no promises.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

1

Ask your midwife

Bring the product's ingredient list. Ours are short, which makes them easy to assess.

2

Keep the routine simple

A gentle cleanse, something moisturising and sunscreen go a long way. This is not the time to try lots of new products.

3

Be careful with supplements

That includes mushroom extracts such as Fungtastic. Don't start new supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting your healthcare provider.

4

Sunscreen against pigmentation

Pregnancy pigmentation gets worse with sun exposure. A mineral sunscreen is simple, gentle protection.

Our position

Our position

We do not recommend starting CBD or CBG skincare during pregnancy or breastfeeding without first talking to your midwife or doctor. That includes our products.

If you want a simple oil in the meantime, pure jojoba oil with no additives is a common, gentle option. If you have questions about exactly what our products contain, email us and we will send all the information you or your midwife need.

Frequently asked questions

Is it dangerous if I have already used CBD skincare?

There are no known reports of harm from topical CBD skincare, but it has not been studied either. If you are worried, talk to your midwife. It is a perfectly reasonable question to ask.

Does this apply to Au Naturel Makeup Remover too?

Yes, it contains 0.2% CBD. The same advice applies: talk to your midwife before using it.

What can I use instead?

Pure jojoba oil, a gentle fragrance-free cream and mineral sunscreen make a simple, gentle base during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
